Division Assistant, Southern Oregon University
Joanna Steinman attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1976. She was awarded a Paralegal Certificate from the Institute for Paralegal Training in Philadelphia in the summer of 1977. In search of a career, she then moved to San Francisco, where she worked in various fields, including advertising, university administration, political consulting, and public interest advocacy.
She relocated to Southern Oregon in 1990 and spent two years as a House Manager at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival during the theatre season and a substitute teacher during the school year. In 1992, she was hired by the Theatre Arts Department at Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University) as Box Office and Office Manager. She transferred to the English and Writing Department at SOU in 2000. Joanna currently holds the position of Division Assistant in Humanities and Culture, one of the seven academic divisions created during SOU’s recent academic reorganization.
During her twenty-two years at SOU, Joanna has served on multiple campus committees, including the President’s Academic Task Force, the Academic Services Appeals Committee, and numerous search committees for staff, faculty, and administrators. She has mentored newly-hired Office Coordinators and has been a pilot user for several new software systems. She is currently a member of the campus Budget Committee.
Joanna Steinman was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She is married to Brian “Rosie” Rosenthal, a doctor of acupuncture, who practices in Medford, Oregon.
